We are pleased to inform you that (i) all ICT equipment has safely arrived at the different universities, and (ii) Dr. Frehiwot has succesfully defended here PhD. We are also looking forward to a lot of exciting events. Please note the following events in your agenda: (i) Wakjira will defend his PhD (February 21), (ii) SP3 will give a seminar on High Performance Computers, we will (iii) start the train-of-trainer for a PhD supervision training (February 27 and 28) and (iv) jointly (the Ministy of Education and Jimma University) organize a nation wide workshop on Ethiopian PhD trajectory and supervision (March 1). 21 February: PhD defence of Wakjira

On February 21, Wakjira Deyyas (Jimma University) will defend his PhD on Improving the management of hospitalized presumptive Xpert MTB/RIF-negative tuberculosis cases in Ethiopia. Please join us through the link at 16:00 CET.

20 and 21 February: Seminar on HPC

Through a unique international collaboration between Ethiopian and Cuban Universities, a HPC is now fully operational at Jimma University. To share the knowledge and to provide support to researchers both within and beyond the IQ-GEAR, SP3 is organizing a 2-day seminar.

ICT equipment has arrived!

27 – 28 February: TOT for PhD supervision

After a thorough selection procedures by Impetus Academy, 16 out of 30 candidates were selected across Addis Ababa University, Ambo University, Hawassa University and Jimma University. The TOT is financially supported by the IQ-GEAR. To ensure roll-out to other Ethiopian Universities additional funds were obtained through a VLIR-UOS international training program entitled ‘Ethiopian SuperStars.

Congrats Dr. Frehiwot!

On January 22nd, Dr. Frehiwot succesfully defended her PhD entitled ‘Agronomic bio-fortification of faba bean (Vivia faba L.) for the dietary micronutrient supplmentation in Ethiopia. She is the first female graduate of the Network. Also big congrats to her supervisors – Pascal Boeckx, Amsalu Nebiyu and Gijs Du Laing

March 1: National workshop

On March 1, the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with Jimma University and IQ-GEAR project, is organizing a national workshop. The workshop will cover various topics, including but not limited to the national policy on PhD trajectory in Ethiopia, barriers and facilitators of PhD completion in the Ethiopian context and best practices in PhD supervision
